“Survival Dance” – the personal exhibition of the graphic designer Gabriel Caloian at the Senso Gallery

The Senso Gallery (Calea Victoriei 12C) invites you on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, starting at 6:30 PM, to the opening of the personal exhibition of the graphic designer Gabriel Caloian entitled “Survival Dance”.

“A dance of survival through this period marked by the pandemic involves first and foremost a practice of decontaminating anxiety and fear, and Gabriel Caloian proposes in his graphics a disconnection from everyday life by immersion in an imaginary of Dadaist origin, in which the automatic dictation processes all his feelings. Without intending to transpose us into the atmosphere of more than a century ago, Gabriel Caloian manages to correlate the current situation with that of the First World War, when the world would know both the famous Cabaret Voltaire and the Spanish flu. Perhaps precisely because history is cyclical, the poetic images invoked in the graphic works gathered in this exhibition are timeless.

The association of characters, objects and text from Gabriel Caloian’s representations give the impression of collage, an eminently Dadaist technique, but his works are “hypnographies” (a term derived from “hypnosis” and “graphy”), made in a mixed technique in which he combines ink, marker and acrylic paint, making quicker reference to the state in which the artist devotes himself to the creative act. “Survival Dance” is claimed from one of the works in the exhibition selection, which is also a continuation of the “Morcovid” series, recently exhibited by Gabriel Caloian at the DANA gallery in Iasi. ” (Ana Sultana Cipariu, curator)

Curated by Ana Sultana Cipariu, the exhibition “Survival Dance” is part of the exhibition program designed by Ana Ștefania Andronic, Art Director of the gallery, and can be visited on May 18 – June 18, 2021, from Tuesday to Sunday, between 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM, in compliance with the measures and access rules imposed by the authorities in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
