Book launch – “VIATA TACUTA A NATURII” (“The Silent Life of Nature”) by Doina Pauleanu

The SENSO Gallery hosted on Tuesday, 13 December 2016, the launch of an exceptional book: “The Silent Life of Nature – Flowers, Fruit, Dainties and Objects in Romanian Modern Painting 1846-1916, written by Doina Pauleanu, a renowned art critic, manager of the Constanta Museum of Art. 


This is the first monography of the genre published in Romania, and it was edited under special graphical conditions by “Monitorul Oficial” Publishing House, and it tackles the period 1846-1916. The album is “the result of remarkable documentation work but, at the same time, quite the visual indulgence, accompanied by the comment of one of the most capable voices in the field. The 312 pages hold reproductions of more than 180 illustrations of the paintings which are both in museums of art – the National Museum of Art of Romania, the museums from Constanta, Galati, Iasi, Piatra-Neamt, Suceava, Cluj-Napoca, Arad, Timisoara, Craiova, Brasov, the Museum of the Municipality of Bucharest, and in representative private collections throughout the country.

It deals with a history of still lives in Romanian paintings starting with the date of the first works having this motif, up to Stefan Luchian’s death, whose centennial we are celebrating this year.

The book includes illustrations from the museums and tackles, in special chapters, creations of our great painters from the above-mentioned period: Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Ioan Andreescu, Stefan Luchian as well as the work of other “small” masters who activated at those times, students of the Schools of Fine Arts from Bucharest, Iasi, München, Paris.

For the launch event, also present were, with the author, numerous personalities of cultural-artistic life, and artists, such as the writerAndrei Plesu, art critic Pavel Susara, Petru Lucaci, president of the Visual Artists’ Union of Romania, Anca Vlad, president of FILDAS Art Foundation, Anca Ivascu, editor-in-chief of the “Monitorul Oficial” Publishing House.
