In the period 12 June – 17 June 2018, Senso Art Gallery participated in the Paper Positions International Art Fair from Basel, Switzerland, a large-scale cultural project. Hosted by Ackermannshof, a splendid building complex dating from the 13th century, the event was held during Art Basel Week, the time of the year when the picturesque city from the banks of the Rhine vibrates to the rhythm of art and tallies the greatest number of visitors.

Senso Gallery chose to represent Romania in this prestigious manifestation with the works of Ana Stefania Andronic BUZU, from the #fast food cycle, which creations propose a complex decorativism, impregnated by symbols and graphic suggestions. They had already been faced with the demands of the European audience, enjoying extraordinary success, from the very first days of the artist’s personal exhibition, organized by Senso in the period 4-31 January 2018, at Five Plus Art Gallery in Vienna, Austria. On this occasion, the art album #fast food – Ana Stefania Andronic BUZU was also presented, a volume containing works of the artist, edited by FILDAS Art in English and German.

“Ana Stefania Andronic is a graphic designer who has carefully evaded the temptations of contemplative life, which are opposed to her open temperament and to the exuberant creative energy she possesses; she has blended, just like the young people from the generation she represents, in the trepidations and the jamming animation of active life, whose prompts she has come to decipher so well, that she accepts them with an interest freed of any stiffness, with good-humour, detachment, and humour” – Doina Pauleanu, critic and Doctor of Art History, manager of the Constanta Art Museum.

The elite in the world of art

The most important art galleries, with special graphics programs worldwide, assembled in Basel, as part of the Paper Positions event, with editions in Berlin and München, which has now reached its 49th reunion. Together with SENSO Gallery, studios from Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Belgium, Austria, France, and the USA were also present this year.

SENSO Gallery participated in 2014 in the Contemporary Art Ruhr Fair (C.A.R), in Essen, Germany with the artists Anca Boeriu, Marius Burhanand Eduard Duldner, and in its 2015 edition with the artist Ana Stefania Andronic (Buzu), the “DiaFonii grafice” (“Graphic DiaPhonies”) exhibition. In the 2015 and 2017 editions of the ArtSafari Art Fair, SENSO Gallery participated with the artist Corneliu Vasilescu (2015) and with Ana Stefania Andronic (Buzu) (the 2015 and 2017 editions), with the #Motion Blur exhibition. In 2017, Senso Gallery participated with the artists Nicolae Moldovan, Ion Anghel and Edith Torony, in Arena Berlin at the 4th edition of the International Art FairPOSITIONS Berlin Art Fair from Germany. It was the first art gallery in Romania present in this large-scale event within BERLIN ART WEEK.

Senso Art Gallery from Bucharest represented Romania in the 4th edition of the International Art Fair POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair din Germaniawhich was held in the period 14 – 17 September 2017, at Arena Berlin (Eichenstraße 4).

Senso Gallery participated in this large-scale cultural event within BERLIN ART WEEK with the artists Edith Torony, Nicolae Moldovan si Ion Anghel, being supported by Catena Group, through the Programme Catena pentru Arta (Catena for Art).

At the International Art Fair POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair (www.positions.de), which had an impressive exhibition space of over 6,500 sq. m, also present were famous Art Galleries from Germany (Berlin, Köln, Bonn, Nuremberg, Hamburg, München, Stuttgart, Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Leipzig, Hanover, Heidelberg, Reutlingen, Weimar, Ahrenshoop, Greifswald, Aach, Baden-Baden), Poland (Warsaw, Poznan), France (Paris), Austria (Vienna), Great Britain (London, Birmingham), the Netherlands (Amsterdam), Latvia (Riga), Spain (Barcelona), Greece (Athens), Lithuania (Vilnius, Kaunas), Canada (Toronto), Japan (Tokyo).

The works entitled Party Is Over, made in 2015 by Edith Torony (“with refuse left by people at the seaside, after they enjoyed themselves”), are followed by the ones entitled Periphery of Memory, where objectual disarticulate elements seem to be looking for new identification props, in order to gradually attain (and this a quote from the author) „the Junkyard Symphony series, an ode to chaos, to reconstruction, to re-composition, reducing everything to a recycled playground, a second-hand world specific to our times, which we can no longer give up.” Most canvases in the current selection belong to the Junkyard Symphony cycle; they are joined by Lapis Ex Coelis, The Broken Gnome, Nocturne, Playground, Chemical Wedding, Periphery of Memory, as individual works, or as embodiments of ampler concerns. Colour is, for Edith Torony, an indispensable instrument of representation: intense to the point of radiance, sometimes even electrical, it can be transparent, aerial, or shadowed by tensions; alive, decadent, it establishes, differentiates and unifies, it analyses or abstracts, tones, valorises, coveys or suggests” – Doina Pauleanu, PhD,, critic and art historian, manager of the Constanta Museum of Art.

Nicolae Moldovan: “The simplification of form to the essence has always been a concern for me, and it has come to be the basic idea for my works. Clean, essentialized shapes, originate in the archaic shapes of ceramic art from the Neolithic, from which I borrowed the object defining and decorating technique, adjusting them to my sculptures, which are alive first of all by the force of the main shape (the mother shape) which, every now and then, interacts with elements of a different consistency and materiality (wood, metal). In a world of complicated things, where the artistic object has to be as shocking and as violent as possible, I am going back to the simple, clean, and preciously weathered, trying to create an oasis of calmness and of apparent simplicity in this world.”

Ion Anghel works a lot (sometimes in spurts) and adds, disburdens, disarticulates, transforms, challenging the common locus, the routes, the connotations, the predictable collations. He enjoys the difficulty, the experiment, the mutation of objects, signs, and senses, he can think and create, with equal virtuosity, in a planar, as well as in a spatial perspective; the employed language evades aggressiveness, emphasising naturalness, fluency, and resourcefulness”. – Doina Pauleanu, PhD, critic and art historian, manager of the Constanta Museum of Art.

Senso Gallery is not at its first participation in internationally-renowned events. In 2014, it was present in the Contemporary Art Ruhr Fair (C.A.R), with the artists Anca Boeriu, Marius Burhan and Eduard Duldner, and in the 2015 edition with the graphic designer Ana Stefania Andronic (Buzu).

It also participated in the 2015 edition of ArtSafari Art Fair with the artists Ana Stefania Andronic (Buzu) and Corneliu Vasilescu, and in 2017, with Ana Stefania Andronic (Buzu).

In the period 25 – 28 May, WE WELCOME YOU to the Kretzulescu Galleries (45 Calea Victoriei next to the National Museum of Art of Romania) where, SENSO Gallery will participate and promote the works of the artistAna Stefania Andronic BUZU.

On this occasion, the #motion blur art album was launched, a project made with the support of the FILDAS Art Foundation and of Catena Group, through the “Catena pentru Arta” (“Catena for Art”) Programme, a volume which contains works of the artist.

„(…) Visual information and text information…. News and graffities, videos and gadgets, videograms and revolt. An ongoing flow, a stream which cannot be contained with the neurons or with the eyes, or with the heart, from which individual extraction/withdrawal becomes less likely with every day that passes. The inflow of information turns into jamming, and it loses its aesthetic value and its informational value – a constant “hum” which taints a person’s course. A fog which spoils the outlook and mitigates fake news, as well as the advances of medicine and the latest trends in fashion. Reduced to “motion blur”, perception withdraws inwards, to phantasies and phantasms which the exterior environment has not yet influenced, but this is the next step, the next stage: exterior jamming is internalized. How much and what remains of dreams and reveries? – Cristi Marculescu, film critic.

An event of a unique scale in Romania, the Bucharest Art Pavilion – Art Safari 2017, organized by the Art Society Cultural Centre, Foundation is an annual event intended for Romanian and regional art, „with an emphasis upon its recent evolutions, where galleries of contemporary art from Romania, as well as from the International scene, are invited to exhibit”.

The 4th edition will be held in the period 19 May – 18 June 2017, at the Kretzulescu Galleries, where the Central Exhibition can also be visited, curated by Wim Waelput – the manager of the Contemporary Art Centre from Ghent (Belgium). At ART SAFARI, a complex educational programme has been prepared, including conferences, artist presentations, as well as book launches for the lovers of art.

The SENSO Gallerywill be present through the artist Ana Stefania Andronic BUZU (at her third participation in ART SAFARI) in the exhibition area where the most important Romanian and international galleries of contemporary and modern art are invited to exhibit. Ana Stefania Andronic BUZU‘s personal exhibitions from the past six years, as well as her participations in international fairs “have investigated new modes of expression in figurative painting, evolving towards a complex decorativism, impregnated by symbols and graphic suggestions”.

Ana Stefania Andronic is a young artist with an inexhaustible imagery, difficult to categorize, which carries the playfulness of shapes and that of logos into a place of buoyant magic. The oneiric pomp, with the sounds and the reverberations of travelling back in time, the sensations, the flavours and the candours forging metaphors are present everywhere, carving, at times ineffably, at other times with a disquieting lyricism, a world which moves under the laws of a personal scenography (…)” – Iolanda Malamen, 2017

Ana Stefania Andronic BUZU has been a member of the Visual Artists’ Union of Romania since 2014, she attended the graphics courses of theNicolae Tonitza” High School of Art and the National University of Arts in Bucharest – the Faculty of Visual Arts, where she had Mircia Dumitrescu as mentor. She chose the Graphics section because she was a fan of cartoons from as early as elementary school and she found in professor Mircia Dumitrescu a mentor with great understanding for “whims” of his disciples.

Between 2010 and now, she has been the protagonist of several personal exhibitions (of digital art, fashion design, decorative art) at the Sofitel Galleries (2009), the Palace of the Parliament 2011), the National Military Circle (2010), Helios – Timisoara (2012-2013), Chrom – Bochum, Germany (the works of ample dimensions, presented in the UV version, were the object of an artistic experiment which it presented to the European public as a premiere, 2013), Imbold – Bucharest(2013), Grand – Hotel Marriott (2014), the National Library of Romania(2014), Contemporary Art Ruhr (C.A.R.), Essen (2014 and 2015), Art Safari – Bucharest (2015 si 2016), Graphic Exhibition – Perceptions- Carturesti-Verona (2017)

Among the group exhibitions in which she was present with works, we make mention of the following: AnimafilmBucharest (with animation works, 1996), the ARTEXPO – TNB Gallery (2004), the National Military Circle (Contest-Exhibition “Marina” – 2nd prize 2010 and 1st prize 2011), the Museum of History – Targoviste (2010), AVANPREMIERE – Fashion and Life Style Festival, „Parada marilor branduri de mod” (“The Great Fashion Brands Parade”) (Club The ARK, 2010), UAP Exhibition – Grafica 2015 – Bucharest – Caminul Artei (2015), the International Art Salon – Grounds – the Palace of the Parliament Romania – Brancusi Hall. The International Competition of Eminescian visual and lyrical creation, the 6th edition from Iasi, Art Safari – Bucharest, and Arts in Bucharest, with the theme IN-VARIABLE, the 7th edition (2016) et al.

She participated with works in Biennials from Bucharest Arad, Targoviste, Timisoara and Buzau, as well as in other group exhibitions, among which, in 2014, the Temeiuri (Grounds) – Salon Graphics Salon of UAP (the Union of Romanian Artists). Also in 2014, she participated, through the Senso Gallery in the Contemporary Art Fair from Ruhr – Contemporary Art Ruhr, Essen, Germany, where she also came back in 2015, a year in which she also participated in theArt Safari Fair from Bucharest. She came back to exhibit here in 2016 as well, and in this year, she was also present at the Temeiuri (Grounds)  the Graphics Salon of UAP, as well as in theInternational Competition of Eminescian visual and lyrical creation, the 6th edition from Iasi. In September 2016, one of her works was selected for the event “ARTE in BUCURESTI” (“Arts in Bucharest”) with the theme IN-VARIABLE, the 7th edition. In 2016, she also launched a colouring book for adults, “IMAGINARIUM”. She completed a wide range of orders for offices of institutions and for the first Cine-Cafe (Senso Cine Cafe).

Senso Art Gallery was represented at the Ruhr Art Fair (Essen) Germany, by the graphic designer Ana Stefania Andronic (Buzu) together with curator Raluca Baloiu. Two series of works were presented to the public within the fair, DiaFonii grafice (Graphic DiaPhonies) and Picturalitati laice si metafizice (Lay and Metaphysical Pictorialities), both of them grouped under the title: Grafisme picturale (“Pictorial Graphisms”).

Whereas in the DiaFonii grafice(Graphic DiaPhonies) series, the young artist inked in her characters, she now ascribes special importance to colour. Her characters, which she created with coloristic spontaneity, conquer the spirit of the imaginary, of dream, of the arbitrary.

Ana Andronic placed her characters among orange trees and ice-cream cones, shrubs, pomegranates and levitating pineapple, clouds and domestic spaces. In a ludic-ironic note, her stories speak of (self)knowledge, interiorization, friendship, loneliness.

Ana’s characters are vested with humour (similar to a CerbuloraX who embodies the wise man searching for wisdom.). In a top hat and smoking a cigar, dressed as a gentleman, CamiloraX conquers the cityscape, the marine, the lunar realm. Having passed initiation filters, the charismatic CamiloraX is subject to various stages of lay evolutionSapte pasi – Seven Steps), as well as spiritual (Sapte emisfere – Seven Hemispheres). Compulsively repeated, the mirrors and the portraits of CamiloraX update the myth of Narcissus. At times, Ana’s canvases become spiritual maps, under the impulse of automatic dictation. Sporadically, Ana Andronic inserts fragments of visual maps, which remind us of Isidore Isou’s Lettrist aesthetics

The complexity, the compositional and coloristic harmony bring to attention genuine pictorial gymnopédias. The lyricism of the narration place Ana Andronic by the side of painters and graphic designers, as well as book illustrators.

Her presence at the Ruhr Art Fair was possible owing to Mrs Anca Vlad, whom we would hereby like to thank.
